DES
Data Encryption Standard - a well-known symmetric encryption mechanism using a 56 bit key. Due to its short key length DES was replaced by the AES, but is still used in multiple encryption mode, e.g., 3DES or Triple DES (FIPS 46-3).

(data encryption standard) Based on the data encryption algorithm, DES was adopted as a federal information processing standard for sensitive but unclassified information by the U.S. government in 1977.
