Kerberos
An authentication system first developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1970s. Kerberos helps enable network users to exchange private information across an otherwise open network. The kerberos server assigns a unique key to each authenticated user and embeds it in messages to identify the sender of the message.
