key

sequence of symbols that controls the operation of a cryptographic transformation (e.g. encryption, decryption). [ISO/IEC 18033-1]

source: ISO10116, 2006

A sequence of Symbols that controls the Operation of a cryptographic transformation (e.g., encipherment, decipherment, cryptographic check function computation, signature generation, or signature verification).

source: ISO11770-1, 1996

A sequence of symbols that controls the operations of a cryptographic transformation (e.g., encipherment, decipherment, cryptographic check-function computation, signature calculation, or signature verification).

source: ISO13888-1, 2004

a sequence of symbols that controls the operation of a cryptographic transformation (e.g. encipherment, decipherment, cryptographic check function computation, signature generation, signature verification, or key agreement) [ISO/IEC 11770-1:1996].

source: ISO15946-3, 2002

sequence of symbols that controls the operation of a cryptographic transformation (e.g. encipherment, decipherment) [ISO/IEC 11770-1:1996].

source: ISO18033-1, 2005

sequence of symbols that controls the operation of a cryptographic transformation (e.g. encipherment, decipherment). [ISO/IEC 11770-1:1996] NOTE – In all the ciphers specified in this part of ISO/IEC18033, keys consist of a sequence of bits.

source: ISO18033-3, 2005

sequence of symbols that controls the operation of a cryptographic transformation (e.g. encipherment, decipherment). [ISO/IEC 11770-1: 1996]

source: ISO18033-4, 2005

a sequence of symbols that controls the operation of a cryptographic transformation (e.g. encipherment, decipherment, cryptographic check function computation, signature generation, or signature verification).

source: ISO9798-1, 1997

In cryptography, a key is a value that determines the output of an encryption algorithm when transforming plain text to encrypted text. The length of the key generally determines how difficult it will be to decrypt the text in a given message. See Strong Cryptography.
